Save Money & The Environment
- One of the best things you can do as a house is group together to buy energy saving light bulbs.
You can get good quality bulbs for under £5 these days. You will easily double your money back on the saving in bills and be a little bit greener at the same time so its a no brainer!
- Take a shower instead of a bath, a normal shower will use five times less water than a standard bath, that's also five times less water to heat..
- Most of the electricity you use will be in lighting so an easy way to cut your bills down and reduce emissions is simply to switch off lights you aren't using – in rooms that will be empty for a while or if you are out of the house.
- Doesn't it seem a bit mad to have things like computers, freeview boxes and televisions on standby for most of the day just to save you a few seconds when switch it on? Over half the electricity these appliances use is in standby so switching them off properly is a simple way to save.
- Few people are aware that a mobile phone charger left plugged in is still using electricity. In fact a typical charger will be responsible for between 35 to 70kg C02 over the year according to Cred – put that into perspective with bags of sugar!
- Put the lid on saucepans! You will be amazed how much you can switch down the heat, this trick alone will save 90% of the energy as all the heat gets trapped inside the pan.
- If the house heating is in a thermostat try turning it down 1 or 2 degrees. Chances are you and your flatmates won't notice the difference but a 1 degree change will save 10% on your heating bill. This could be upto £100 for a typical student house.
- Get fit and save money by walking and cycling instead of driving or catching a bus.
